Laura Lynn Hardy, 19, was cycling home to Locust Valley after having lunch with her ailing grandfather when she spotted a thick manila envelope on the sidewalk in front of Lincoln Federal Savings. She quickly stopped to pick it up and zip it into her backpack.
After she arrived home, she opened the envelope and found a total of $300,000 in cash and checks made out to Fenster Ford. Hardy immediately phoned the bank and told them about the envelope's contents.
She then braved snowy conditions and rode her bike 10 miles back to Lincoln to return the money.
Hardy arrived at the bank at approximately 5:00 p.m. Xavier Mooney, President of Lincoln Federal Savings, and Fred Fenster of Fenster Ford greeted her at the bank and thanked her for doing the right thing. The trio posed for photos. Hardy then turned around and made the 10-mile ride back to her Locust Valley home.
